Researcher Spotlight – Jasmine Ardeleanu
Biography:
I am currently an undergraduate student at the Royal Veterinary College studying Biological Sciences, with a strong interest in immunology and genetic disease. I am particularly drawn to how genetic variation influences immune system function and contributes to disease development.
I aim to continue developing my research skills and pursue a career in this field, contributing to advances in our understanding and treatment of immune-related genetic diseases.
What got you interested in this field of research?
My interest in immunology really started when I began learning how dynamic and responsive the immune system is, how it can adapt, remember, and protect us in such a precise way. I especially remember a second-year lecture on immunodeficiencies caused by single gene mutations where I was struck by how a small change in DNA could completely disrupt immune function. That moment shifted my perspective; I started to see disease less as a set of symptoms and more as something rooted in underlying molecular mechanisms.
What is the motivation behind your research/work?
My motivation comes from wanted to understand what is happening beneath the surface of a disease, rather than just the symptoms we can see. On a personal level, I’m driven by the idea that my work could contribute, even in a small way, to better treatments or earlier diagnoses.
What are your favourite research tools (high tech or low tech)?
One of my favourite research tools is qPCR, because it provides a precise and quantitative way to measure gene expression. I find it particularly powerful for linking genetic changes to cellular behaviour, which is especially relevant in fields like immunology and genetic disease. It’s fascinating how even subtle shifts in expression can reflect much broader biological effects.
At the same time, I still rely on simple tools like a good notebook or organising ideas visually on paper when I’m trying to understand experimental results or plan assays. Breaking down steps or sketching workflows helps me think more clearly and catch details I might otherwise miss.
What made you decide to get involved with the BSGCT?
I decided to join the BSGCT because beyond the academic aspect, it felt like a great way to learn from people working across research, clinical translation, and industry, and to see how advances actually move from the lab into treatments.
I also wanted the opportunity to connect with a wider scientific community that shares similar interests. Being part of the society helps me stay engaged with current developments, attend events that broaden my understanding, and build a clearer sense of possible career pathways in this area.
