Join Dr Charley Lovatt-Travers is a research associate working with Professor Alan Parker in the Viral ImmunoTherapies and Advanced therapeutics Laboratory (VITAL) at the Division of Cancer and Genetics, Cardiff University School of Medicine.

Her current research, funded by Pancreatic Cancer Research Fund, focuses on “smart” viruses which are engineered to only infect and kill cancer cells. Her research aims to generate “smarter” viruses which can be used to deliver anti-cancer medicines, which activate the immune system, directly to the tumour. Charley’s previous research within the VITAL lab explored the virus-host cell interactions responsible for the very rare cases of blood clots following vaccination with adenovirus-based COVID-19 vaccines.

Prior to becoming a virus tinkerer, Charley undertook her PhD exploring new immunotherapy targets for the treatment of lung cancer at the European Cancer Stem Cell Research Institute in Cardiff University. When she is not training viruses, Charley can be found at home doing crafts and hanging out with her rescue dog Romy.
